When would you benefit from having aquatic therapy?

”When my patients have questions about Aquatic Therapy I like to share these frequently asked questions with them. A lot of times it puts their minds at ease and gives them a treatment option they never knew about.” – Dr. Samuel Rabizadeb P.T., D.P.T., C.H.T.

If you have difficulty standing for extended durations on the land.

Why? Because the buoyancy of the water will support you and reduce the weight bearing intensity allowing you to tolerate more standing.

If you have arthritis at spinal column, hip, knee, and/or ankle.

Why? Buoyancy decreases pressure on joints. 50% of body is supported in waist deep water and 90% of body weight is supported in neck deep water.

If your body easily gets flared up, or aggravated by your daily activities.

Why? Flare ups come with inflammation in the body. Water that is relatively colder than ~98 degrees F (normal body temperature) is known to create a physiological response called vasoconstriction, which is scientifically known to reduce swelling.

If you have chronic pain, from tendonitis/tendinosis, Fibromyalgia, or other pathological conditions.

Why? The properties of the water stimulate other receptors (thermoreceptors/mechanoreceptors) in the body that override nociceptors (or pain/danger receptors). This allows you to successfully inhibit inaccurate information that is being sent the Central Nervous system. With chronic pain, the body becomes overprotective and has oversaturation of nociceptors that warn pain leniently and falsely. This does not by any means permit you to push through pain. Be sure to talk to your healthcare provider to make sure that your response is appropriate to the treatment.

If you want to try a different form of conservative treatment involving exercise for your condition.

Why? By changing the environment where you exercise, it may be psychologically more appealing. Conservative treatments have very minimal side effects or adverse effects compared to invasive treatments. Aquatic Therapy is considered a conservative treatment.
