What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation?

The FCE is a series of comprehensive and objective tests that measure a worker's capacity to perform all work-related tasks.  This evaluation also provides objective data to the physician or insurance carrier about the worker's ability to perform their job.  The FCE is also used as a test to determine if the worker is ready for work conditioning or work hardening.

What is Work Conditioning?

Work conditioning is a interdisciplinary approach that addresses the injured worker's physical and functional needs for returning to work.

This conditioning is performed in daily sessions of 4 hours per day maximum.  It includes total body conditioning and work-related activities training.

Work conditioning should be prescribed when the patient has plateaued in physical therapy but still needs work related conditioning and training before returning to work.
