Acupuncture might be the answer for nagging pinched nerves in the neck!
It probably helps to start out this journey by defining a few terms, the first of which is “cervical radiculopathy,” a condition that results in neurological dysfunction caused by compression and inflammation of any of the nerve roots of your cervical spine (neck). Some may mistake this as simply being a common case of neck pain.
The cervical spine consists of 7 vertebrae that protect the spinal cord, support the head, and allow for movement. It is a complex area of the body that is made up of discs, ligaments, nerves, and muscles in a complex interplay. We don’t often think about how miraculous this is until we have pain that restricts our freedom to move properly.
When we do have pain, often accompanied by headaches and radiating pain, it can become the only thing we think about until we get relief. In the most extreme cases the pain can be accompanied by numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, and diminished reflexes.
This is where acupuncture comes into play. Acupuncture has been studied and is recognized as a valuable tool in a therapist’s toolbox. Here is a quote from a study found on the National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine website:
“Whether it is syndrome differentiation or special disease, acupuncture and cervical spine manipulation has achieved good results in the treatment of cervical radiculopathy.”
Acupuncture may be the ideal treatment for Cervical Radiculopathy
The ideal treatment relieves pain while avoiding surgery and drugs. To quote the Bone and Joint Decade 2000-2010 Task Force on Neck Pain and Its Associated Disorders, their study concluded that there is no, “clear evidence that surgical treatment of cervical radiculopathy provides better long-term outcomes than nonoperative measures.”
Regardless of how your pinched nerve occurred, the combination of acupuncture and manual manipulation offers a path to a pain-free life.
